Masterful Hong Kong film-maker Wong Kar Wai understands that love is about the unspoken moments between people, the hidden gestures betraying loneliness. Chungking Express is a unique expression of such notions of love. The film doesn't pretend that love is all-embracing and constant, in the way so many predictable films would suggest. Love, for the protagonists of this film, comes and goes between subtle glances - always elusive. Indeed if a level of contentment can be reached at all for these characters - it is a fleeting moment, a memory of a song, the way that somebody smells. There are so many essential moments in this film - when Dinah Washington's 'What a difference a day makes' plays over two lovers cavorting, the moments when characters talk to inanimate objects to overcome their loss of love, the brief glances between the second policeman and the waitress across the counter of the fast-food restaurant.
It has been dismissed as an exercise in style over substance by many, mainly due to the hypnotic way in which the film is shot and the lack of a real story as such. I don't feel the need to defend it from these accusations because the beauty of the film is there on the screen and nothing I have said or could say could really do it justice. It breaks my heart every time.

Kenneth L (gb) wrote: While I had high hopes for this one, I have to admit it turned out to be just okay and not much more. It has a talented cast and an initially interesting premise, but a number of shortcomings in the writing prevent it from becoming anything like as good as it could have been.
The film, which stars John Turturro and was written and directed by him as well, focuses on a couple of aging friends (Turturro and Woody Allen, appearing in someone else's movie for once) who start a novel business when the older man sets the younger man up as a gigolo for wealthy women. Though the film is about a man entering prostitution at a late age, it's not a crude sex comedy in the vein of something like Deuce Bigelow: Male Gigolo.
Rather, it aspires to be a pensive and sweet look at New York life, along the lines of Allen's own Hannah and Her Sisters or Annie Hall. Unfortunately, in terms of its actual success it's much closer to lesser Allen works like Whatever Works or Anything Else. Though John Turturro's character is ostensibly the main focus, he's weirdly underdeveloped; we never really see the character on his own and have very little sense of who he is outside of the demands others make of him.
Woody Allen's character actually gets more substantive development, and yet in terms of the main narrative his role basically amounts to 'Woody Allen is doing something amusing in the corner while the story happens.' The film has a couple of weird, rather misjudged subplots that seem to belong to a different movie. And the whole movie is ostensibly building up to a three-way between Turturro's character and characters played by Sharon Stone and Sofia Vergara, but it barely happens!
Overall, I could imagine a version of this movie that was quite good; but as it is, the film feels too thinly sketched-out and messy to really have much of an impact. Leon B (us) wrote: Review:Although this movie is about an historical moment, I did find the pace quite slow and boring in parts. The director captured the period very well and I did feel for the servants who had to work extremely hard for there disrespectful masters. Griet, whose played by Scarlett Johannson, didn't do anything wrong as a servant, but she was constantly getting punished because of the attention that she was getting from Johannes Vermeer, played by Colin Firth. When you actually look at the real picture, you can't help but wonder what is going on in this girls mind. This movie does bring some light to the whole world surrounding this one picture, but I would have liked to see more about Vermeer who was a very unique artist.
His attention to detail was a long process and the way that he created the colours were an eye opener. Anyway, you do have to be in the right mood to watch the movie because it has a very moody tone, but it is interesting because of it's historical element. Average!Round-Up:After watching a few of Scarlett Johannson's movies back to back, she did seem to act the same in her earlier roles, but she has grown out of that habit of late. With movies like The Avengers and Lucy, she has become a more physical actress who has been blowing up at the box office. She also showed that she can tone down her roles with movies like Under The Skin and Hitchcock which didn't rely on her physical abilities so she has proved that she can take on any project that is put in front of her. Colin Firth is the master of period dramas so this role was right down his street. He is a proud owner of an Oscar after his brilliant performance in The King's Speech so there isn't that much more for him to achieve in such a versatile career.

Watch The Grandmaster movie. The Grandmaster stream online. The Grandmaster online. The Grandmaster dvdrip movie. The story of martial-arts master Ip Man, the man who trained Bruce Lee. Director: Kar Wai Wong The Grandmaster HD 720p, The Grandmaster dvdrip movie, The Grandmaster dvdrip movie, For Wong kar-wai’s films, I think we cannot identify what types of his films, because his shooting style is unique, and all of films are full of profound meaning. For example, The Grandmaster (2013), before I saw that I think it is Martial-Arts film, but after that, I think it is can be the literary film as well, just because the perfect light and shadow interplays with the exquisite film sound.
I have to say Wong kar-wai is a grandmaster, because he takes about 14 years to make this movie, the every single shot that is from his honesty, sincerely and love of film. He is also successful film maker to bring the Chinese film and Chinese movie stars to people around the world, like 2046(2004), Chungking Express (1994) and In the Mood for Love (2000). I am his big fan, so, I have been waiting for this film long time, and I was not disappointed when I watched it, and it was worth to wait. This film has two important story lines of two main characters, Ip Man (Tony Leung) and Gong Er (Zhang Ziyi), they both has to make decision of their lives during the anti-Japanese War that is a big background. They are need to choose one way to move on, first thing is for family’s future, second one is for the dignity of their Martial art school of the past.
They are both choose the second one, Ip Man never returns to his wife and family, and Gong Er’s is also break off the engagement and remain single for the rest of her life after her father’s (Gong Yutian) dead, even she always loves Ip Man, she was never confess to him until the end, she finally fulfilled a promise her had made for the her Martial art school. She shows her iron heart to everyone, however, she is still a traditional Chinese lady, she never confesses love to her lover but she kept it at the bottom of heart.
In this film, I can see many grandmasters in martial arts society (Wulin). Wong kar-wai shows the spirit of martial arts by characters delineation.
Gong Yutian (Qingxiang Wang) is never defeated in his life, and famous in whole China, when he is betrayed by student (Ma San), before his dead, he said “do not ask, do not revenge.” to his daughter Gong Er, which reflected the mind of martial artist. Gong Er keeps her promise, save her Martial arts sect, and take back the dignity from the Ma San. Ip Man is a person of principle and strongly, and he has many disciples of martial art, pay his whole life to spread martial artist. “The Razor” Yixiantian (Zhen Zhang), however dangerous, he is never give up against Japanese invader.
All of them make up martial arts society; this is best delineation for the Chinese martial arts spirit and moral courage. The Chinese people already lost many martial arts in the long history, but the spirit of the martial arts will be carried forward for future generations. The cinematography part is gloriously bitter and beautiful, every shot is perfect, Philippe Le Sourd is this film’s cinematographer, he’s done cinematography is really well, he has very good ratio to treat the shallow and the light, the characters in almost dark screen, whatever the face’s shallow or the back shallow, that are so attractive, also bedazzled the audiences. And the action part is more slow and soft, but still strong. There are no violence and bloody scenes, but they use really Gongfu to fight, we can feel the power.
Then comes the part I like best that is background music. Wong is particularly good at contrasts the atmosphere by the music, this time, he is worked the music of this film with Shigeru Umebayashi, and Shigeru Umebayashi brings the Japanese music elements that is the Japanese firm. Chrysler diagnostic software. It’s worth mentioning that is drum, even with many times repeated, but still like it, and I think it plays big part in the movie.
There are three martial arts scenes use the drum’s sound as the background music; it is like add the heartbeat to every single action. Wong kar-wai give us a fresh and new audio-visual feast, he gives viewer a new style Martial-Arts film, new understanding for WuLin, the new view of the martial artist’ life, love, and Gongfu. Zhang Ziyi brought a mature performance in this film, she plays the Gong Er has a strong heart like men, but she does not lose the women’s tenderness.
She shows elegance 64-hands Ba Gua movement within a few minutes, but she was already learning the Ba Gua Zhang about 2 years just for this film. Gong Er as successor of her father (Wang Qingxiang) and the Gong Family, she is good saver and keeper for heritage. Zhang Ziyi plays really delicate, her stubborn character, lonely and tears, as the Wong kar-wai’s words, she is dong a simple thing, but she is doing the best, really well. In conclusion, there are three parts make this film different to other martial art films, which are beautiful pictures, wonderful action editing and amazing sound.
We can see the martial artist’s soul by this film; they want to pass on the martial art and culture from generation to generation, I think there are more children want to learn the Chinese Gongfu by this film, just as they would like to see.
